💥 What “Suck Less” Really Means
When people first hear me say Suck Less. Train More. they sometimes think it’s negative. They don’t get it.
It’s not about tearing yourself down. It’s not about beating yourself up. It’s about facing reality, owning the grind, and doing the things that make you a better human being — even when it’s uncomfortable.
It’s Not About Being Perfect
Everybody sucks at something. Maybe it’s eating better, sticking to your workout plan, or showing up consistently to class. I suck at things too. The difference is: I don’t stay stuck there.
That’s the whole point of Suck Less. You don’t have to go from zero to hero overnight. You just have to get a little bit better every day.
- Off track with your workouts? Get back on track.
- Ate garbage food? Fine, don’t quit — eat better next meal.
- Too tired or busy to train? Tell that little voice in your head to shut up and show up anyway.
The world will always throw obstacles at you — work, stress, family, fatigue. Life is busy. But here’s the truth: it’s always going to be busy. If you don’t make your health and training a priority, you’ll wake up one day weaker, unhappier, and unable to protect yourself or your family.
Where Suck Less Came From
The motto goes back years. I had a coach being way too hard on a student — someone older, less athletic, who was grinding and making progress. She held that student to her own personal standard, and I stopped her right there.
I said: “If we’re doing that, then give me your black belt back, because when I got mine, I knew more and trained harder than you did. Should I hold you to my standard?”
She didn’t like that answer — but it made the point. Everyone’s journey is individual. Everyone’s ceiling is different. What matters is progress. If we can help somebody be safer, more capable, and a little more confident than yesterday, that’s winning.
That’s what Suck Less is all about.
Stop Making Excuses
I hear it all the time:
- “Work is too busy.”
- “I’m too tired.”
- “I’ll start next week.”
News flash: life isn’t slowing down. Work will always be busy. Stress will always be there. Something will always come up.
You can choose to keep making excuses, or you can choose to train anyway. Even if it’s just five minutes a day. Block it off on your calendar. Protect that time like your life depends on it — because it does.
Training isn’t just about muscles or belts. It’s about being capable. It’s about living longer, being healthier, keeping depression at bay, and showing up better for your family.
Fitness, Food, and Fighting the “Comfort Zone”
Our bodies adapt. Eat crap food all the time, and eventually you don’t even notice how bad you feel. Start eating clean, then slip back into junk — suddenly you feel awful. Same with training. Sit around long enough, and your body adapts to being weak, tired, and sluggish.
The fix? Do the hard things.
- Pick up the barbell.
- Get on the mat.
- Go for the run.
Yeah, it’s going to suck. Back squats suck. Deadlifts suck. Krav Maga sparring sucks. But you know what sucks worse? Dying early. Being too weak to play with your grandkids. Not being able to protect yourself or your family when it matters.
Shut Up and Train
We all have that little voice in our head: “Skip the workout. Eat the donut. Quit when it gets tough.”
You’ve got to tell that voice to shut up. Take control of it. Do the thing anyway.
David Goggins stares at his shoes for 30 minutes before he runs. He doesn’t want to do it either. Nobody does. But he does it. That’s why he’s better for it.
Confidence doesn’t come from wishing or talking yourself up. It comes from preparation. From showing up. From putting in the reps.
Why This Matters at RMSDF
At Rocky Mountain Self Defense & Fitness, Suck Less. Train More. isn’t just a motto — it’s our mission.
We don’t hand out belts like candy. We don’t sell fake confidence. We train people for the real world:
- Krav Maga to survive real violence.
- ProjectFit to build strength and longevity.
- Citizen Defender to carry and fight with responsibility.
We want you safer, stronger, and more capable tomorrow than you were today. That’s it.
The Takeaway
Look — workouts will be hard. Training Krav Maga will be hard. Life will be hard. But that’s the point.
Because when you do the hard things, you grow. You live longer. You’re better for yourself, your family, and your community.
So here’s the challenge:
⚡ Stop making excuses. Tell that inner voice to shut up. Show up. Train hard. Suck Less. Train More.
