RMSDF Firearms Training Philosophy
Why We Train Decision-Makers — Not Just Shooters
When most people think about firearms training, they picture the range.
Targets.
Accuracy drills.
Speed.
Those things matter.
But they only address one piece of the problem.
At Rocky Mountain Self Defense & Fitness in Castle Rock, our approach is different. Our goal is not to create better shooters.
Our goal is to create better decision-makers.
Because in real self-defense situations, the hardest part is rarely pulling a trigger.
The hardest part is knowing whether you should.

Most Firearms Training Focuses on the Wrong Skill
Traditional firearms training focuses heavily on:
• marksmanship
• speed
• equipment
• range drills
These skills are valuable, but they assume something important:
That the situation has already been decided.
That the threat is clear.
That distance exists.
That the correct response is obvious.
Real life rarely works that way.
Most self-defense encounters are messy, fast, and uncertain. People must process information, manage stress, and make decisions under pressure.
This is why RMSDF focuses on something deeper.
Judgment.
The Problem With “Shooter-Only” Training
If someone trains only on a square range, several critical skills are missing.
They may never practice:
• recognizing threats early
• managing distance and movement
• physical contact or grappling
• weapon retention
• decision-making under stress
• avoiding unnecessary escalation
This creates a dangerous gap between training and reality.
Real violence does not happen on a shooting lane.
It happens in parking lots, hallways, doorways, and close spaces where distance disappears quickly.
Why RMSDF Uses Laser Training Pistols
One of the biggest differences in our program is how we train firearms skills.
Most of our work uses laser training pistols instead of live fire.
This surprises people at first. Including the instructors at RMSDF
But there are powerful reasons behind it.
Laser training allows students to practice:
• decision-making scenarios
• movement
• verbal commands
• close-range encounters
• weapon retention situations
• real-world problem solving
All without the safety limitations of live ammunition.
This allows training to focus on thinking under pressure, not just shooting.
Decision-Making Is the Real Skill
In civilian self-defense, most problems are decision problems.
People must quickly determine:
• Is this a real threat?
• Can I disengage safely?
• Is force justified?
• What level of force is appropriate?
• What are the legal consequences?
These questions must be answered in seconds, often while under intense stress.
That’s why our program focuses heavily on scenario-based training.
The goal is not to rehearse one perfect answer.
The goal is to build the ability to think clearly when things become chaotic.
Integration With Real Self-Defense Training
Another key difference at RMSDF is that firearms training does not exist in isolation.
Real self-defense situations often involve:
• close distance
• physical contact
• grappling or clinch situations
• attempts to control your body
• attempts to access your weapon
This is why our training integrates Krav Maga self-defense skills with firearms awareness.
Students learn how to:
• manage distance
• control an attacker’s hands
• protect their weapon
• create space to disengage
• access tools responsibly when necessary
This integration reflects the reality of civilian self-defense.
Responsibility Comes First
Carrying a firearm is not just a technical skill.
It is a serious responsibility.
Responsible defenders must think about:
• avoiding violence whenever possible
• protecting bystanders
• legal consequences
• emotional and psychological impact
Training that ignores these realities does not prepare people for real life.
At RMSDF, we treat these topics with the seriousness they deserve.
Calm Under Pressure
The ultimate goal of training is not aggression.
It is calm decision-making under pressure.
People who train consistently develop the ability to:
• stay composed
• recognize danger early
• make thoughtful decisions
• control their emotions
These qualities are far more valuable than speed alone.
Who This Training Is For
The Citizen Defender program at RMSDF is designed for people who want a realistic approach to self-defense.
This includes people who:
• carry or plan to carry a firearm
• want to understand responsible self-defense
• want training that integrates physical skills and decision-making
